Which Pathway Should You Choose? A Beginner's Guide

Choose between six starting Pathways in Lord of Mysteries, understand Acting and SAN, and plan your first steps without confusing lore with playable progression.

Your first decision is not which Pathway sounds strongest in the novel. It is which role you will enjoy while learning combat, exploring, and joining other players. A forgiving frontliner and a fragile mobile attacker can both be appealing, but they ask very different things of a beginner.

The setting has 22 standard Pathways, with Sequences descending from 9 toward 0. This guide covers the six starting choices discussed in the original article. The full lore progression is not a claim that every Pathway or Sequence is currently playable. The opening preference quiz can help you think about your style; treat its suggestion as a starting point, not an obligation.

Choose by the job you want to do

  • Want a forgiving first character? Start by considering Warrior.
  • Want ranged damage and fast pack clearing? Look at Mystery Pryer.
  • Want a balanced solo option with Klein's Pathway fantasy? Consider Seer.
  • Prefer keeping a group alive? Consider Spectator.
  • Enjoy aggressive close-range combat? Look at Bard.
  • Want mobility and accept a steeper learning curve? Consider Apprentice.

Warrior — Twilight Giant Pathway

Warrior is the author's first recommendation for a new free-to-play player: a durable melee frontliner with room to recover from mistakes. Its appeal is learning encounters without feeling punished for every imperfect movement. The trade-off is slower movement and less impressive area damage. Choose it for staying power, not because it guarantees effortless solo clears or makes spending irrelevant.

Mystery Pryer — Hermit Pathway

Mystery Pryer suits players who prefer attacking from range and clearing groups efficiently. The original guide describes a relatively accessible damage role, but that does not mean you can ignore positioning. Enemies closing the distance are the main concern: leave yourself space to move rather than standing still to finish one more attack.

Seer — Fool Pathway

Seer is the natural draw for readers who want to follow Klein's Pathway. The author presents it as a balanced ranged option with survival tools and divination-related exploration appeal. It is a comfortable choice if you value flexibility over specializing in large-area damage. Treat puzzle interactions as content-specific opportunities, not a guarantee that Seer bypasses every obstacle.

Spectator — Visionary Pathway

Pick Spectator because you enjoy supporting a party. Healing is its central attraction in the source guide, while lower solo damage is the cost. The original also mentions revival and psychology-related story interactions; check the current skill and quest requirements before relying on either. Calling it the only possible healer, or promising instant dungeon invitations, would overstate what this guide establishes.

Bard — Sun Pathway

Bard is presented as an aggressive melee choice with burst damage and a strong PvP identity. The source highlights resistance to interruption and advantages against evil creatures. Those benefits still depend on the applicable skills and targets. If you enjoy staying close and choosing attack windows, it may suit you; do not mistake a melee damage role for the safety of a dedicated tank.

Apprentice — Door Pathway

Apprentice appeals to players drawn to spatial movement and a mobile attacker playstyle. The author associates it with passing through barriers and spatial jumps, while warning about fragility and demanding execution. It is the least comfortable first recommendation here for someone still learning basic encounters. Choose it if mastering movement is part of the fun, not simply because mobility looks powerful on paper.

For a separate discussion of group versus solo priorities, see the Pathway tier guide. A ranking and a good personal starting choice are not the same thing.

Acting: check your advancement requirements before grinding

The Acting Method connects advancement with the identity of your Sequence. The original guide uses divination and observing the stars for Seer, and understanding emotions for Spectator, to explain the idea. The useful beginner lesson is to read your current Acting objectives instead of assuming that repeatedly defeating enemies will satisfy every requirement.

Pay attention to NPC relationships as well. The author recommends building the relevant Connections early because some interactions may need Affinity or quest progress. Open the requirement for the specific activity first, then work toward that unlock; do not spend time raising an unrelated NPC just because a general guide says “increase Affinity.” Our Connections guide explains the wider system.

The source also links behavior that contradicts a role with slower potion digestion and SAN risk. That is not independently established here as a universal, automatic game penalty. Follow the current objective text and status tooltips rather than assuming every out-of-character action has a hidden cost.

SAN: plan your exit before the situation becomes dangerous

Contamination and dangerous encounters make SAN another resource to watch, not a bar to ignore until combat ends. The original recommends withdrawing when your condition becomes unsafe. That is the practical habit to keep: know where your recovery option is before starting a risky excursion.

Its claim that zero SAN simply turns you into a hostile monster is too broad. The site's more detailed SAN guide records staged effects, a Loss of Control countdown, and an author's recovery account. Use the status and countdown in your own client; do not infer permanent character loss or an identical outcome in every situation.

The source suggests safe areas such as churches or clubs, holy water or sedatives, and Bard-related mental resistance as possible help. These specific recovery and resistance claims have not been independently verified for the current build. Check whether the location, item, or skill actually states a SAN effect before trusting it. In particular, standing somewhere that looks safe is not a substitute for confirming that your SAN is recovering.

Sequence reference: Seer and Mystery Pryer

These are lore reference chains, not a current game level-cap or unlock schedule. In particular, Fool Sequence 3 is Scholar of Yore, and Sequence 1 is Attendant of Mysteries. “Lord of Mysteries” is not the Sequence 1 title.

The original names Lavos octopus blood and star crystal, then rarer examples such as Fulegen hound eyes and a dark demonic wolf's heart, when discussing potion materials. Use the exact recipe shown by your current advancement task before gathering or buying materials; lore ingredients and playable recipes should not be treated as interchangeable.

Rewards mentioned in the original: check dates and eligibility

The September 7 article describes Chinese-service open-beta rewards. Keep this list as a reminder of what to look for in the event interface, not as confirmation that a new account can claim them today. English cosmetic names below are descriptive translations.

  • Pre-registration: a velvet Klein-cat brooch, a “Fellow Countryman of the Fool” title, a cane-and-finger-snap emote, 300 gold pounds, and more than 180,000 soli.
  • Seven-day tasks: a classical harp component, the “First Clear Sky” outfit (初晴), and a legendary Audrey Hall Connection.
  • Main-story progress: the 俏夜典袍 outfit and a walnut pedal-bike mount.
  • 疯抢之夜: the source describes an 8 p.m. event with counter-kill tokens exchangeable for cosmetics otherwise priced from CNY 6 to over CNY 200. Check the server's own clock, schedule, and exchange rules.

The source also reports a “no stat sales” promise and more than 200 cosmetics obtainable without payment. Neither is independently confirmed here as a current monetization guarantee. Do not make a purchase or choose a server on that statement alone.

Your first-session checklist

  1. Choose a role whose everyday combat you actually want to play.
  2. Read the next Acting and advancement requirements before farming.
  3. Identify the specific Connection or quest unlock you need.
  4. Confirm a working SAN recovery method and watch status changes.
  5. Claim only rewards that the current event interface says your account is eligible for.

Start with those five steps. You do not need to plan every Sequence on day one; you need a character you enjoy, a clear next objective, and a way to return safely.
